About Us

aboutusSome of our members pictured above.

The Lakehurst Volunteer Fire Company (LVFD) is a 100% volunteer department that was organized (as the Manchester Volunteer Fire Company #1) after the rope factory, an early industry, was destroyed by fire in March 1911. The department underwent a name change when Lakehurst broke away from Manchester Township and became the Borough of Lakehurst in 1921. The volunteer fire company responded to the Hindenberg disaster in 1937, as well as the more recent Super Storm Sandy that ravaged the Jersey Shore.

The Lakehurst Fire Department does more than fight fire... much more. As your local, community-based, first-response emergency agency, we respond to motor vehicle accidents, extrication requests, water and confined space rescues, hazardous material incidents, natural disasters, preparation of landing zones and other EMS assistance, fire police, and all other emergencies not directly related to law enforcement.

When fires do occur, however, the department is prepared to respond with equipment and a highly trained and dedicated group of firefighters. Our multiple apparatus are described on this site, which include pumpers, brush and rescue trucks. The Department provides fire prevention and suppression for both structural and wild land fires. The department also has numerous “Mutual Aid” agreements with neighboring departments, including Manchester, Ridgeway, Whiting and Joint Base McGuire Dix Lakehurst, where we can assist each other as needed in the event of emergency.

The volunteers of the department also find time to participate in a wide variety of community events and outreach. Fire trucks and firefighters are at parades, school programs, holiday celebrations, and even chauffeuring Santa Claus. We are at the firehouse every Wednesday night from 6pm to 9pm for drills and/or meetings if you are interested in seeing what we do firsthand.

The Lakehurst Fire Department is devoted to providing you the very best service and protection in the most efficient and effective means possible. New volunteers are always welcome.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Lakehurst Volunteer Fire Company is to provide the highest standard of fire prevention, education and suppression, rescue services and hazardous incident response to any person and premises in the Borough of Lakehurst and surrounding areas as requested. We serve our community and surrounding areas with a dedicated team of highly trained volunteers, who, at a moment’s notice, place other’s safety and security before their own.

First-in-Last-out

This motto exemplifies the standard of excellence to which we measure ourselves; the finest tradition of the fire service to which we are committed to uphold. We are the community’s all-risk response agency, to which people turn in time of need. We pride ourselves on being the first-in— never shirking our responsibility to protect the public whom we serve, or serving the public whom we protect—and last out—never leaving until the job is finished. This creed drives our daily efforts, whether conducting a carbon monoxide alarm check, helping with a community event, fighting fire or rescuing people from danger.

In the event of a structural fire in town we want to use all the water available to us in our hydrant system so we utilize two major methods of getting water onto the fire quickly while overcoming our enemy of friction loss in the hose.
